Heel pain is a minor problem that many people ignore but affects their quality of life. Going to the ground in the morning feels like stepping on nails and walking like a limp, which seriously affects travel and daily activities. Many people think it's due to too much walking or bad shoes, but in fact there may be deeper health problems hidden behind it. It is not only an "alarm" for the feet, but may also be related to the lumbar spine, inflammation and even aging. So, what exactly is heel pain?
What causes heel pain
1. Plantar fasciitis
This is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a thick strip of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. Long-term standing, improper walking posture, or wearing inappropriate shoes can cause repeated stretching and inflammation. Typical symptoms are: severe pain on the first step after getting up in the morning, which is relieved after walking a few steps, but worsens after walking for a long time.
2. Calcaneal spur
Long-term plantar fasciitis can irritate the base of the calcaneus, causing bone growth to form "bone spurs." But please note: not all bone spurs will hurt. Some people have bone spurs but are asymptomatic on X-rays, while some people have obvious pain but no bone spurs. What really causes pain is chronic inflammation of the surrounding soft tissue.
3. Achilles tendonitis
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle and heel bone. A sudden increase in the amount of exercise such as running and jumping can cause overuse of the Achilles tendon and cause inflammation. It manifests as pain and swelling above the heel, which feels warm to the touch and worsens when going up or down stairs or running.
4. Fat pad atrophy
The heel has a fat pad that acts like a "natural shock absorber" to cushion pressure. As we age, this layer of fat will become thinner and even shrink, causing the bones to bear direct impact, making it feel like "bare feet on the ground" when walking, causing pain.
5. Lumbar spine problems
Some people's heel pain is actually "fake pain." When a lumbar disc herniates or nerves are compressed, abnormal conduction of the sciatic nerve can cause radiating pain in the lower limbs, manifested as numbness, soreness or tingling in the heel, which is often mistaken for a foot problem.
How to relieve heel pain
1. Reduce burden + local care
Avoid standing or walking for long periods of time, and choose soft and supportive shoes to reduce pressure on your heels.; Soak your feet in warm water around 40℃ for 10 minutes every day. After soaking, gently massage your heels to promote local blood circulation and relieve muscle tension and pain.
2. Adjust posture + use tools
When standing, keep the force on both feet even and avoid shifting the center of gravity to the heel of one side.; If the pain is obvious, you can use heel pads or orthopedic insoles to support the arch of the foot, disperse pressure, reduce stress on the heel, and help relieve pain. Avoid wearing high heels or hard-soled shoes on a daily basis.
3. Moderate stretching + avoid irritation
Do heel stretching exercises every day, such as standing against a wall, bending one knee in front of one foot, straightening the back foot and touching the heel to the ground, leaning forward to stretch the calf and heel, and hold for 15 seconds each time; Avoid strenuous exercise or frequent walking up and down stairs to avoid aggravating heel injuries.
Indications for medical treatment for heel pain
1. Pain that lasts for more than 2 weeks without relief
If heel pain lasts for more than 2 weeks and does not improve after rest and care, or even worsens, it may be plantar fasciitis, calcaneal spurs and other diseases. Timely medical examination is required to identify the cause and then provide targeted treatment to avoid delay of the condition.
2. Accompanied by obvious swelling or deformity
In addition to pain, the heel may also be significantly swollen, red, or have hard lumps or deformities when touched. This may be Achilles tendonitis, calcaneal fracture, etc. If you do not seek medical treatment in time, it may affect the function of the foot and make subsequent treatment more difficult.
3. Limitation of activities or systemic symptoms
If you are unable to walk or tiptoe normally, or are accompanied by symptoms such as fever, numbness, or weakness in your feet, it may be caused by infection, neuropathy, etc. You need to see a doctor as soon as possible to rule out serious diseases through professional examinations to avoid delaying the best time for treatment.
